The Naked Director – a series about the man who changed Japanese porn

One of the main surprises of this August.

Are you watching porn? You can not answer. You have definitely heard about Japanese porn at least from the ear – especially about the ubiquitous censorship, without which adult films cannot be sold in the country. But even so, Japan is now one of the leaders in the porn market.

The first porno appeared there a very long time ago – erotic engravings of shunga appeared in the 12th century. But the industry really began to develop after the Second World War. Then, under the influence of Western magazines like Playboy, erotic publications began to be released in the country – the so-called bini-bon, softcore pornography magazines. In the video industry, there was a slightly different order than now: almost no real sex was shown, the actors pretended to be everything, and their genitals were carefully wrapped so that no one saw anything. Here, of course, the omnipresent censorship also helped.

Tooru Muranisi decided to change this order of things – The Naked Director, the new series from Netflix, was dedicated to him.

Muranisi began as a simple salesman: he did not sell English textbooks very well. Then trouble happened with work, my wife cheated, and our hero, by chance, got into the adult industry, where he not only found his calling, but became one of the visionaries. For example, we owe him the invention of the first-person porn genre (the so-called POV), but most importantly, he was one of the first to decide that it was time to start showing people real sex, albeit with censorship.

TV shows about celebrities still alive are always a difficult topic, especially if a celebrity is ambiguous. If you read about Muranisi, it turns out that he was a very ambiguous personality: he often violated the law, lousy, but at the same time had an excellent instinct. The Netflix show (based on the book of the same name) pays tribute to it: the main character here also cannot be called unambiguously good or bad.

It is appropriate to compare it with Walter White (in terms of character, not bloody deeds): a quiet and inconspicuous person from the “outside world” who discovers another reality and realizes that it suits him much better. And so it goes to full blast, figuratively (and literally) tears off its clothes and begins to create a porn story.

All this would not have happened without the amazing game of Takayuki Yamada – you could see it, for example, in the ravens of the Crows or in crazy advertisingPlayStation . You really believe in his Muranisi: he is full of contradictions and seems to be able to act nobly, but he can say anything to achieve his goal. And at the same time true to his beliefs.

But that’s not all: The Naked Director does not rely on acting alone. If you think about it, the series is unlikely to succeed in really scolding for something. For example, it is very beautifully shot: the colors are bright, the scenery is beautiful, and the atmosphere of Japan of the 80s feels great. Small shops with eroticism, film sets of pornographic films, even simple houses of the Japanese – everything seemed to have come down from old photographs.

It is especially interesting to see how those times are shown in the series: the death of the emperor and the end of the Showa era, the decline of old media formats (magazines) and the rise of new ones (VHS; in The Naked Director, the authors adhere to the version that the format won Betamax precisely because of porn).

But the main thing is the balance that holds the show. Here, in ideal proportions, comedy, drama and, in fact, real erotica were mixed. The first half of the eight-episode season is easier and funnier, then a serious story begins. It’s not for nothing that I compared Muranisi with Walter White – in some ways The Naked Director really resembles Breaking Bad. The hero receives recognition in his work, and with him the problems, moreover, many of which he does not suspect until the very end.

Muranisi here is the main, but not the only hero. In parallel, we are shown the story of a young girl, Megumi, who realizes her sexuality and tries to free herself from parental oppression – in order to eventually become a porn superstar Kaoru Kuroki. And then there’s the story of a friend of Muranisi named Toshi, who brings him into the adult industry – and then gets into a really terrible mess.

This is the whole The Naked Director: both funny and serious, vulgar and, to some extent, sophisticated. We are then shown how Muranisi comes to S&M photography and makes such a sexy set that the director of the studio just sits down on the sofa and begins to masturbate. Then – a family drama, the story of corrupt policemen, even an action place was found.

Well, when we get used to everything, The Naked Director throws up some absurd scene: for example, how the heroes have sex for five minutes on the set of porn, right in the process they move to the street and scare some random grandfather. And so all eight episodes: not a second to rest, not a single extra scene, not a single sagging episode – but a sea of humor, eroticism and good drama. The finale of the first season clearly hints at a continuation, but at the same time does not break off by the cliffhenger. This can be considered the first arch of history – and, frankly, I look forward to what will happen next. Because now The Naked Director has every chance to become one of the main series surprises of the year – he is so good. And the topic of Japanese porn (and porn in general) is not discussed so often in popular culture – it’s definitely not worth skipping this.
